The Product Development Engineer, Team Lead will develop engineering concepts, release BOM’s, and 2D prints from 3D data.  Functionality drives all, but awareness of cost, weight, quality, manufacturability, and serviceability are all key factors.  Communicate with engineering customers regarding new designs and changes (manufacturing, purchasing, service, configuration management, vehicle engineering, customer/product center, supply base oversight).


Experience in one of the following areas: 

Powertrain Engineering:  Powertrain, Engines, Engine Calibration, Cooling Modules.

Drivetrain:  Transmissions, Transfer Cases, Drivelines, Axels


Responsibilities and Expectations include but are not limited to:

  • Works closely with program and engineering management to translate and incorporate customer vehicle-level performance and configuration requirements into cross-functional integration and design targets.
  • Interacts effectively across the organization: program management, customers, application engineering, design teams, manufacturing teams, and senior management.
  • Select appropriate materials in conjunction with design team.
  • Distribute as required, engineering documentation, ECNs, drawings, and/or specifications electronically or by paper.
  • Prepare tolerance stack-ups and establish fits and tolerances consistent with sound design practice and engineering standards.
  • Check layouts, assemblies, details, bills of material and other related drawings and documents.
  • Analyze design for conformity to standard industry and engineering department practices.
  • Review design for optimum simplicity and economy of manufacture; coordinate with other designers, product engineers, purchasing, manufacturing engineering, and field service personnel.
  • Ability to work with design/manufacturing teams to ensure gate approval to production.

Position Purpose and Requirements

Provides technical and analytical support to Product Development Engineering. May provide direction and guidance to less experienced team members. Refers problems that cannot be resolved to the next level. Serves as a central resource with design, process, manufacturing, test, quality and marketing as the product(s) move to production and distribution. Involvement may last throughout all stages of a product’s lifecycle including modifications, upgrades and maintenance of the product or product line.


Basic Requirements: 

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering or Engineering Technology
  • At least 5 years experience in product design/development
  • At least 1 year leading others in engineer/design activities


  • Master’s Degree in Engineering or Engineering Technology
  • At least 3 years experience in product design/development
  • At least 1 year leading others in engineer/design activities


  • PhD in Engineering or Engineering Technology
  • At least 1 year leading others in engineer/design activities

Additional Requirements

  • Qualified candidates, including current Navistar employees, must be legally authorized on an unrestricted basis (US Citizen, Legal Permanent Resident, Refugee or Asylee) to be employed in the United States and be cleared to review controlled unclassified information (CUI) / Navistar does not anticipate providing employment related work sponsorship for this position (e.g., H-1B status)
  • Bachelor's Degree in Mechanical Engineering
  • At least 5 years of automotive/truck/bus experience

Ability to direct design team

  • TeamCenter and UG/NX experience preferred
  • Conduct packaging studies and 3D data reviews/direction
  • Release 2D prints to support product/parts builds
