The Aerodynamics Chief Engineer is responsible for initiating and delivering industry leading research and product development in commercial vehicle aerodynamics and thermal engineering.


Responsible for aerodynamic tool development, execution and correlation including wind tunnel, on-road (coast down, constant speed), and computational fluid dynamics (CFD) results. 


The Aerodynamics Chief Engineer will perform a variety of tasks including but not limited to the following: 


  • Staffing and developing Aerothermal group personnel
  • Managing and coordinating aerodynamic and thermal technology programs
  • Managing and coordinating product program activities related to truck aerodynamics and thermal management
  • Utilizing wind tunnel testing as well as computational fluid dynamics (CFD) to meet internal customer needs in a timely and cost-effective manner 
  • Development of the testing tools (develop/refine procedures, define instrumentation specs, develop Navistar aero development process including correlation and recommendation of best measurement/simulation technique)
  • Review and provide recommendations for aero CFD simulations (supported and executed by simulation staff), advancing the state-of-the-art in aerodynamic and thermal engineering as well as developing the capabilities of less experienced members of the organization
  • Establishing budgets and timing for Aerothermal support of R&D and product program
  • Representing Navistar as an industry expert and recognized leader in Heavy Vehicle Aerodynamic
  • Developing outside collaborative sources of funding for Aerothermal R&D
  • Maintaining and extending Navistar leadership in Aerodynamics
  • Planning and execution (with support of aero and testing staff) of wind tunnel and coast down or constant speed tests

Position Purpose and Requirements

Oversees overall engineering functions. Responsible for leading the processes, problem solving and implementing solutions to the most complex and high risk engineering issues. Provides leadership on a broad basis; influences technical and regulatory standards bodies. Serves as a critical asset in helping Corporation influence the engineering strategy of key partners.


Basic Requirements: 

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering or Engineering Technology
  • At least 12 years experience in product design/development
  • At least 6 years experience managing technical professionals and technical staff in engineering and design activities


  • Master’s Degree in Engineering or Engineering Technology
  • At least 10 years experience in product design/development
  • At least 6 years experience managing technical professionals and technical staff in engineering and design activities


  • PhD in Engineering or Engineering Technology
  • At least 8 years experience  in product design/development
  • At least 6 years experience managing technical professionals and technical staff in engineering and design activities 


Additional Requirements

  • Qualified candidates, excluding current Navistar employees, must be legally authorized on an unrestricted basis (US Citizen, Legal Permanent Resident, Refugee or Asylee) to be employed in the United States. Navistar does not anticipate providing employment related work sponsorship for this position (e.g., H-1B status)
  • 5  Years of Aerodynamic experience on Ground Vehicle Development (including previous practical experience with experimental methods like wind tunnel and aerodynamics road tests for ground vehicles – coast down & constant speed techniques and data analysis
  • Ability to travel up to 25% for up to 7 days at a time
  • Knowledge of transient Computation Fluid Dynamics applied to external aerodynamics and aerothermal

Desired Skills:

  • MS Aerodynamics, Aerospace Engineering or Equivalent Preferred
  • Previous experience with commercial vehicles and line haul trucking aerodynamics development
  • Familiar with automotive dynamics and road load measurement and calculation
  • Knowledge of Ground Vehicle Cooling Systems Preferred
  • Able to manage multiple tasks simultaneously, often managing conflicting goals and ambiguity comfortably
  • Good communication skills, written and verbal, with ability to communicate complex technical matters to broad audiences
  • Ability to deal with ambiguity natural of engineering product development environment
  • Experience with governmental regulations concerning fuel economy and ground vehicle transportation
  • Significant experience leading and developing other engineers and technicians (direct or indirect reports)
