Overview

The Technical Specialist will be the Champion for vehicle wide dimensional management.

 

Responsibilities and Expectations: 

  • Develops and establishes a philosophy of dimensional management and vehicle level strategies consistent with established heavy truck production and engineering processes that can be employed across product lines to improve vehicle quality, manufacturability, fit and finish, design gaps, and performance.
  • Works closely with manufacturing and design engineering teams to develop dimensional requirements for existing and future products.
  • Develops/coordinates/leads training for design engineers on:

                          -Vehicle dimensional management strategy

                          -Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T)

                          -Design for Assembly/Manufacturing

                          -VSA and other techniques as may be required

  • Initiates and champions projects to improve dimensional management on existing products.
  • During virtual reviews, identifies systems and components requiring dimensional management.
  • Works cross functionally with design teams and dimensional experts within functional and manufacturing teams to solve engineering and quality problems.
  • Works closely with advanced manufacturing team to develop dimensional strategies to improve assembly processes, and reduce labor for rework; and to develop inspection processes and requirements.

Position Purpose and Requirements

Oversees overall support functions for Product Development Engineering. Responsible for leading the processes, problem solving and implementing solutions to the complex and high risk engineering issues. Influences technical and regulatory standards bodies. Provides proactive strategy around identified opportunities. Serves as a critical asset in helping senior management articulate financial and technical strategy.  Serves as a critical asset in helping Corporation influence the engineering strategy of key partners.

 

Basic Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering or Engineering Technology
  • At least 8 years experience in product design/development or new technologies
  • At least 2 years experience leading new technologies or specialized technologies

OR

  • Master’s Degree in Engineering or Engineering Technology
  • At least 6 years experience in product design/development or new technologies
  • At least 2 years experience leading new technologies or specialized technologies

OR

  • PhD in Engineering or Engineering Technology
  • At least 4 years experience in product design/development or new technologies
  • At least 2 years experience leading new technologies or specialized technologies

Additional Requirements

  • Qualified candidates, excluding current Navistar employees, must be legally authorized on an unrestricted basis (US Citizen, Legal Permanent Resident, Refugee or Asylee) to be employed in the United States. Desired Skills:
  • Able to develop datum strategies, dimensional specifications, and measurement plans
  • Able to understand, create, apply, and interpret GD&T per ASME Y14.5-2009
  • Able to interpret measurement data to determine process capability
  • Knowledge of basic statistical concepts and process control
  • Working knowledge and practical application of Variation Simulation Analysis - VisVSA, CM4D
  • Able to correlate measured capability data to analysis
  • Understanding of automotive PSW/PPAP process and review of SPC run-at-rate data
  • Knowledge of measurement systems
  • Knowledge of vehicle manufacturing processes
  • Strong oral and written communication skills
  • Approachable with excellent interpersonal skills to work effectively across diverse teams
  • Able to operate with a minimum of supervision and with an ownership mindset
  • Familiarity with VisMockUp, NX, and Team Center will be helpful
